George’s Pet Portrait – Drawing with Indian Ink and a Dip Pen

There’s something rather special about capturing the character of a much-loved pet on paper, and George was a lovely subject to draw.

For this portrait, I worked from a photograph of George, using traditional Indian ink and a dip pen to create a detailed black-and-white drawing. I love the expressive quality of ink, where every line, mark and little detail helps bring a subject to life.

Capturing George’s Character

One of the things I particularly enjoyed about drawing George was his distinctive black-and-white colouring and wonderfully expressive face. His bright eyes, alert ears and fluffy coat gave me plenty of opportunities to play with contrast, texture and line.

I used bold areas of black ink to define his darker markings, balancing these with fine, delicate pen strokes to suggest the softness and texture of his fur. Working in black and white means there’s nowhere to hide behind colour, so getting the balance of light and dark just right is especially important.

The Joy of Drawing with Indian Ink

Indian ink and a dip pen are wonderfully traditional materials. Unlike a pencil or brush, a dip pen encourages you to think carefully about each mark. Fine lines can suggest individual hairs, while heavier strokes create depth, shadow and definition.

I enjoy the slightly unpredictable nature of working with ink, too. Each stroke becomes part of the finished drawing, giving the portrait its own character and a lovely sense of spontaneity.

Although I worked from a photograph, my aim was to create more than a simple copy. I wanted to capture George’s individual appearance and personality in a drawing that would be treasured.

Bespoke Pet Portraits in the Lake District

As a professional artist based in the beautiful Lake District, Cumbria, I create bespoke artwork inspired by the subjects and stories that matter to people. Pet portraits are particularly rewarding because our animals are such an important part of our lives.

Whether it’s a much-loved cat or dog, every pet has its own distinctive character. Working from a photograph allows me to study those little details and translate them into an original piece of art.

George’s portrait was a wonderful opportunity to explore the textures and contrasts of traditional pen and ink, creating a timeless image of a very characterful cat.

If you’re interested in commissioning a bespoke pet portrait, I’d love to hear from you. Please get in touch to discuss your ideas and how we might create a special piece of artwork celebrating your own much-loved companion.
