I work from your photographs, carefully considering the composition, colours and little details that make your pet recognisable. Sometimes it's the expression in their eyes, a favourite pose, or even something wonderfully unusual — like Bella relaxing in a bird bath!

Bella: A Bespoke Watercolour Pet Portrait

There’s something incredibly special about creating a painting of a much-loved pet. They become such an important part of our lives, and when they’re no longer with us, having a beautiful, bespoke piece of artwork can be a wonderful way to keep their memory alive.

Recently, I had the pleasure of painting Bella, a beautiful black cat with plenty of character, from a photograph supplied by her owner. Bella was a very well-loved pet, and this particular photograph captured her sitting in a bird bath — a wonderfully quirky moment that made the perfect subject for a unique watercolour portrait.

Turning a photograph into something personal

As a pet portrait artist based in the Lake District, Cumbria, I create bespoke watercolour paintings from photographs. Every portrait is individually painted by hand, with the aim of capturing not just how a pet looked, but something of their personality too.

With Bella, I loved the contrast between her deep black coat and the soft, delicate washes of watercolour. Painting a black cat can be particularly interesting because black isn't simply one colour. There are subtle tones, reflections and variations within the fur, and I wanted to bring those details out while still keeping the painting soft and natural.

The bird bath also added something really special to the composition. Rather than being simply a portrait of Bella, the painting captures a little moment from her life — one that her family could look back on and remember.
